The Department of General Practice at the University of Otago is hosting the inaugural interdisciplinary symposium, Mental Health: Are we on the right track? to debate controversies in mental healthcare.  While people with severe mental illness may need medication, we are seeing a worrying trend towards the medicalisation of life’s challenges. During the symposium we intend to explore the interface between mental illness and normal emotional responses, for example depression and sadness, and discuss alternatives to drug therapy. We will draw on the experience of health practitioners, academics, policy makers and other members of society.  There will be keynote presenters, panel discussions and workshops to examine these issues.

While the conference is being hosted by the University of Otago’s General Practice Department, professionals and non-professionals alike with any background or interest in the issues raised are encouraged to attend.  The presentations, workshops, and discussions will be richer for the inclusion of a wide range of perspectives, and the General Practice Department openly encourages the participation of those in other disciplines, professions, or walks of life.

The General Practice Symposium – Mental Health – are we on the right track?  has been endorsed by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) and has been approved for up to 10 hours CME for General Practice Education Programme Stage 2 (formerly AVE), CPD online and Maintenance of Professional Standards (MOPS) purposes.
